the theme of this year's international sculpture biennale of cararra is the 'monument', or rather the radical process of de-monumentalization which has freed sculpture from any celebratory function. artists such as paul mccarthy, cai guo-qiang, maurizio cattelan were invited to develop monuments to exhibit throughout the italian city of carrara.

fans sporting their teams_ makarapa was a ubiquitous scene during the 2010 world cup in south africa. these colourful hats are actually made from plastic mining helmets, cut, bent and hand painted with different football scenes. designboom visited the johannesburg workshop where many of these designs were produced.
